Car Paint Protection in Plainfield, NJ

Car paint protection film, usually shortened to PPF, is a clear thermoplastic urethane film applied over your vehicle’s paint to absorb the damage the road throws at it. It takes the rock chips, the bug etch, the road salt and the light swirls so the paint underneath does not. At Northeast Collision in Plainfield, NJ we assess which panels on your specific car are actually getting hit, and film those. If your vehicle needs paintwork before protection is applied, our auto body painting services can restore the finish first.

Good film is invisible once it is on. The point is not to change how the car looks, it is to keep the car looking the way it does now.

What Paint Protection Film Does, and What It Does Not

Being clear about the limits up front is more useful than overselling it.

FILM HANDLES THISFILM DOES NOT HANDLE THIS
Rock and gravel chips on the hood, bumper and leading edges.Dents. Film is a surface layer, not armor. If the panel is already damaged, dent repair should be completed before applying paint protection film. An impact hard enough to deform the panel still deforms it.
Bug splatter and bird droppings that would otherwise etch the clearcoat.Collision damage of any kind.
Road salt and winter brine contact on lower panels.Damage that is already there. Film seals in existing chips and scratches rather than fixing them.
Light swirls and wash marks, many of which self-heal.Deep scratches that cut through the film into the paint below. Existing deep scratches may require car paint scratch repair before PPF is installed.
UV exposure that fades and dulls paint over years.Rust that has already started under the paint.
Door edge and door cup wear from daily use.Poor prep. Film over contaminated or unpolished paint locks the flaws in permanently.

Coverage Options

You do not have to film the whole car, and most people should not. Damage is concentrated on the surfaces facing forward, so coverage is sold in zones.

COVERAGEWHAT IT COVERSBEST FOR
Partial frontLeading edge of the hood, leading edge of the fenders, mirror caps.Budget-conscious protection of the highest-impact strip. A visible film edge sits across the hood.
Full frontFull hood, full fenders, front bumper, mirror caps. The most popular option. No film line across the hood, and it covers everything that faces oncoming debris.
Extended / trackFull front plus rocker panels, A-pillars, the leading edge of the roof, and often the headlights.Highway commuters and anyone regularly on salted or gravel roads.
Full bodyEvery painted exterior panel.New vehicles, custom finishes, and cars being kept long term or preserved for resale.
High-wear add-onsDoor cups, door edges, the rear bumper loading ledge, the fuel door.Small, inexpensive, and they cover the places that wear first on every car.

We walk your car with you before quoting. A vehicle with 60,000 highway miles on it has a very different wear pattern to one that mostly does short local trips, and the coverage should follow the evid

Our Process For Car Paint Protection

How Self-Healing Film Works

Quality PPF has an elastomeric topcoat over the urethane. When the surface picks up a light scratch or a swirl from a wash mitt, the polymer has enough memory to flow back to its original shape once it is warmed. Sitting in the sun usually does it. Warm water over the panel speeds it up.

That is genuinely useful for the fine marks that accumulate on any daily-driven car, and it is exactly why filmed paint still looks new years later. It is not magic. A scratch that cuts through the topcoat and into the film itself does not heal, and neither does anything that reaches the paint underneath.

Why Choose Us For Car Paint Protection Film Installation

Film Thickness, Explained

PPF is measured in mils, or thousandths of an inch. Automotive film generally runs between roughly 6.5 and 10 mil, and thicker is not automatically better.

A thicker film absorbs more impact energy, which is why heavy-duty film makes sense on a hood that faces a lot of gravel. A thinner film conforms more easily to complex curves, tight bumper returns and recessed edges, which is where a stiff film is most likely to lift or show a wrinkle. On most vehicles the right answer is a mid-range film across the car with heavier film reserved for the flat, high-impact surfaces. We will tell you which we are proposing on your car and why.

Film Over Fresh Paint: The Cure Window

This is the most common and most expensive mistake in paint protection, so it gets its own section. If your vehicle has recently undergone full car painting, the new finish must fully cure before PPF is installed.

Freshly refinished paint is not finished when it is dry to the touch. Clearcoat continues to release solvents for weeks afterwards as it fully hardens. Sealing a panel under film before that off-gassing completes traps the solvents in the film, and the result can be hazing, blistering or adhesion failure.

So if your car has just been refinished, resprayed or had a panel painted, the film waits. We will tell you the specific window for your job when you collect the car, and we will book the film installation for after it. If the paintwork was done elsewhere, tell us the date and what was sprayed, and we will advise. The correct order is always bodywork, then paint, then cure, then film.

How We Install It

How We Install It

  1. Assessment. We walk the car with you and agree the coverage zones based on where your paint is actually taking damage.
  2. Decontamination wash. A thorough wash followed by a chemical and clay decontamination to lift embedded iron, tar and industrial fallout.
  3. Paint correction where needed. Any swirls or marring are polished out first, because film magnifies and permanently seals whatever is underneath it.
  4. Final prep. Panels are stripped of any wax or sealant and wiped down so the adhesive has clean paint to bond to.
  5. Pattern and cut. Film is cut to the vehicle’s specific panel patterns. Where an edge would be visible or vulnerable, we wrap it around the panel rather than leaving it on the face.
  6. Wet application. The panel and film are wetted with a slip solution so the film can be positioned precisely, then squeegeed down to force the solution out.
  7. Edge work and tucking. Edges are tucked behind panel gaps and trim so there is no lifting point for a pressure washer or a car wash brush.
  8. Cure. The adhesive needs time to bond fully, and we will tell you how long to leave the car dry and unwashed.

Caring for Filmed Paint

  • Leave the car unwashed for the first week after installation so the adhesive can bond fully.
  • Hand wash where possible. Automatic washes with stiff brushes are the fastest way to catch and lift a film edge.
  • Keep a pressure washer well back and never aim it directly at an edge or a seam.
  • No abrasive polish or compound on film. Use products intended for PPF.
  • Remove bird droppings, bug residue and fuel spills promptly. Film resists etching, it does not ignore it.
  • If an edge ever does lift, bring it in rather than pressing it back yourself. Contamination under a lifted edge means that section needs replacing.

Will paint protection film yellow or peel over time?

Quality urethane film with a UV-stable topcoat should not yellow within its service life. What does yellow is cheap film, and what peels is film installed over contaminated paint or with edges left exposed on the panel face. We wrap edges around the panel and tuck them behind trim wherever the shape allows, which removes the lifting point that causes most failures.

It can, but it seals them in. Film is clear, so every chip and swirl underneath stays visible and becomes permanent until the film comes off. That is why we correct the paint first. If the damage is significant, refinishing the panel before filming is the better sequence, and we would tell you that rather than film over it.

Yes, when it is removed properly and the paint underneath was sound when the film went on. The film is warmed and pulled back at a controlled angle, and any adhesive residue is cleaned off. Problems arise when film is left far beyond its service life, or when it was applied over paint that was already failing or was a poor-quality repair.

Always after, and not immediately after. Fresh clearcoat keeps releasing solvents for weeks as it hardens, and sealing it under film too early can cause hazing or adhesion failure. We will give you the cure window for your specific job and book the film installation for after it. The order is bodywork, paint, cure, then film.

Properly installed film on a clean, corrected surface is effectively invisible at normal viewing distance. Where you can sometimes see a line is on partial coverage, because a partial hood kit by definition ends part way across the hood. That is the main reason most customers move up to full front coverage, where the film follows the panel edge instead.

I would highly recommend using Northeast Collision as I did for my car. From the management ( Andrew Lallos) to the auto repair men all were highly professional and competent. Andrew Lallos walked me through step by step in what the process would be, dealt with my insurance directly and kept me abreast of all communications. My car was severely damaged but it looks brand new today. Though I hope not to have to use a body shop again, it would only be North East Collision if I had to. Again this experience was painless and professional with a great outcome. Thank You Eileen O’Brien
