Auto Body Painting in Plainfield, NJ
Auto body painting is the process of stripping, preparing, refinishing and clear-coating a vehicle panel so the new color is invisible against the factory paint around it. At Northeast Collision in Plainfield, NJ, that work is done with a PPG paint system, computerized color matching and a downdraft spray booth, and it is backed by a lifetime warranty on paint.
We have been refinishing vehicles in Plainfield for over 50 years and hold Lexus Certified Collision Center, I-CAR Gold Class and GM Certified credentials. Whether you need one scratch corrected or a complete color change, the page below explains what happens in the booth and which of our four paint services fits your car.
What Auto Body Painting Actually Involves
Factory paint is not one layer. It is a stack of four, and a repair is only invisible when every layer is rebuilt in the right order. Understanding the stack is the fastest way to understand why a two-minute touch-up pen never matches and a booth refinish does.
Layer | What it does | Why it matters in a repair |
E-coat | Factory-dipped corrosion barrier bonded to bare steel. | Once a scratch breaks through it, oxidation starts. It cannot be rebuilt by hand. |
Primer / sealer | Fills micro-imperfections and gives the color a uniform base to sit on. | Skipping it is why cheap paint jobs show sanding marks and color shift within a year. |
Basecoat | The color itself, including metallic and pearl particles. | Metallic flake has to be laid down at the same angle and density as the original or the panel reads a different shade in sunlight. |
Clearcoat | The gloss and the UV barrier. All of the shine you see is this layer. | Most light scratches never reach past clearcoat, which is why many can be corrected without any color being sprayed. |
Every refinish we do rebuilds that stack. The panel is cleaned and degreased, damage is corrected, the area is sanded and feather-edged, primer and sealer go down, the color is sprayed in controlled coats, and clearcoat is applied and cured in the booth before the panel is polished back to a factory gloss.
Which Paint Service Does Your Car Need?
Most people arrive knowing what the damage looks like, not what the repair is called. Find your situation in the left column and follow the link.
What you are looking at | The service you need |
A scratch, scuff or key mark on an otherwise sound panel | Car Paint Scratch Repair: depth decides whether it polishes out or needs color. |
Faded, peeling or oxidized paint across most of the car, or you want a different color | Full Car Painting: a complete respray including jambs and shuts. |
A color, finish or design that did not come from the factory: pearl, candy, matte, two-tone | Custom Car Painting: spray-out cards and sign-off before anything is sprayed. |
Paint that is currently fine and you want it to stay that way | Car Paint Protection: clear urethane film over the panels that take the hits. |
A dent, crease or hail damage under the paint | Start with Auto Body Repair. Bodywork always comes before refinishing. |
How We Match Your Car’s Color
Your paint code is the starting point, not the answer. A single factory code can have several accepted variants because manufacturers run paint across different plants, different batches and different suppliers over a model year. On top of that, the paint on your car today is not the paint that left the factory: UV exposure, road salt and washing have all moved it.
So we match the car in front of us rather than the code on the door jamb. A spectrophotometer reads the existing panel and returns the formula variants closest to it. We mix the strongest candidate, spray a test card, and compare it against your panel in the booth’s corrected lighting before a drop of color goes on your vehicle. If a repaired panel sits beside an original one, we blend the new color into the adjacent panels so the transition falls across a body line rather than at a hard edge.
Inside Our Paint Shop
If you are comparing estimates, these are the words that will appear on them.
- PPG paint system. We spray a PPG refinish system, including waterborne basecoat, which gives us access to manufacturer formulas and variant data for the vehicles we see most.
- Downdraft spray booth. Filtered air is pulled from the ceiling down through the floor, carrying overspray and dust away from the wet panel instead of across it. This is the difference between a clean finish and one with nibs in the clear.
- Controlled bake cycles. Curing in the booth means the clearcoat hardens under known temperature and airflow, rather than in an open bay with whatever is in the air that day.
- Color-corrected lighting. Panels are assessed under lighting that renders color accurately, so a match is confirmed before reassembly, not in your driveway.
- Certified technicians. Lexus Certified Collision Center, I-CAR Gold Class and GM Certified, which means our refinish procedures follow the manufacturer’s, not a generic shortcut.
Refinish Terms, Explained
If you are comparing estimates, these are the words that will appear on them.
Term | What it means |
Spot repair | Refinishing a contained area within a panel rather than the whole panel. Only viable on smaller damage away from an edge. |
Panel refinish | Stripping and repainting a complete panel, edge to edge. |
Blend | Fading new color into the neighboring panel so the eye cannot find the join. Standard practice on metallic and pearl finishes. |
Respray | Refinishing the entire vehicle. See Full Car Painting. |
Cut and buff | Wet sanding cured clearcoat and machine polishing it to remove texture and bring up gloss. |
Orange peel | The slightly dimpled texture clearcoat takes on if it is sprayed or cured badly. Corrected by cutting and buffing. |
Jambs and shuts | The painted surfaces you only see with a door, hood or trunk open. Repainted on a color change; left alone on a same-color repair. |
Auto Body Painting for Plainfield and the Surrounding Towns
Our auto body shop is at 1128 North Avenue, Plainfield, NJ 07062, and we refinish vehicles for drivers across Union, Middlesex and Somerset counties. Fanwood, Scotch Plains and Watchung are all under three miles out. Westfield is a little over four. We regularly see customers from South Plainfield, Dunellen, Green Brook, Berkeley Heights, Garwood, Mountainside, Piscataway, Clark, Metuchen, Cranford, Rahway, Edison and Woodbridge, and we cover a 20 to 25 mile radius from the shop.
Paint Work and Your Insurance Claim
If the damage came from a collision, vandalism or a weather event, the refinish is usually part of a claim rather than an out-of-pocket repair. We write estimates that document the operations the job actually requires, including blend time into adjacent panels, and we deal with your insurer directly so you are not translating between the two of us.
You choose the shop. An insurer can recommend a repair facility, but in New Jersey the decision is yours. Bring us the claim number and we will take it from there.

Where do I find my car’s paint code?
On most vehicles it is on a sticker in the driver’s door jamb, though some manufacturers place it under the hood, in the glove box or in the trunk near the spare. Bring the car in and we will find it. We will still read the panel itself, because the code alone does not account for factory variants or years of sun exposure.
Will the new paint match the rest of my car exactly?
That is the standard we work to. We read your existing panel with a spectrophotometer, spray a test card and confirm the match under corrected lighting before we spray the vehicle. On metallic and pearl finishes we also blend into the adjacent panels so there is no hard edge for your eye to catch.
How soon can I wash or wax my car after it is painted?
You can wash it gently by hand after about two weeks, using plain water and a soft mitt. Leave waxing, sealing and any machine polishing for at least 90 days. Fresh clearcoat continues to off-gas as it fully hardens, and sealing it too early traps solvents in the film. We will give you the specific timeline for your job when you collect the car.
Does repainting a car hurt its resale value?
A documented, professionally executed refinish that matches the original color generally does not. What does hurt value is a mismatched panel, visible overspray, or paint that fails early. Keeping the estimate and the warranty paperwork gives a future buyer the evidence that the work was done properly.
Is auto body painting covered by insurance?
It depends on the cause and your policy. Paint damage from a collision is normally handled under collision coverage, while vandalism, falling branches or hail usually fall under comprehensive. Ordinary wear, fading and stone chips accumulated over time are not typically covered. We will tell you honestly which category your damage falls into when we write the estimate.

I would highly recommend using Northeast Collision as I did for my car. From the management ( Andrew Lallos) to the auto repair men all were highly professional and competent. Andrew Lallos walked me through step by step in what the process would be, dealt with my insurance directly and kept me abreast of all communications. My car was severely damaged but it looks brand new today. Though I hope not to have to use a body shop again, it would only be North East Collision if I had to. Again this experience was painless and professional with a great outcome. Thank You Eileen O’BrienPosted on Google![]()
