Full Car Painting in Plainfield, NJ
Full car painting is a complete respray: every exterior panel is stripped back, prepared and refinished as one job, so the whole vehicle leaves with a single, consistent finish rather than one fresh panel against five faded ones. At Northeast Collision in Plainfield, NJ, our auto body painting process for a full respray includes the door jambs and shuts, is completed in a downdraft booth using a PPG paint system, and carries a lifetime warranty on paint.
It is the right call when paint has failed across the car rather than in one place, and it is the only way to genuinely change a vehicle’s color.
Full Respray or Single-Panel Refinish?
| Â | SINGLE-PANEL REFINISH | FULL RESPRAY |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Damage contained to one or two panels on a car whose paint is otherwise healthy. | Fading, clearcoat failure, oxidation or peeling across multiple panels, or a color change. |
| Color matching | The new panel must be matched and blended into the existing paint. | No matching problem. Everything is sprayed from the same batch. |
| Jambs and shuts | Left in the original color. | Painted, if you are changing color. |
| Time in the shop | Days. | Weeks. Disassembly and reassembly are most of it. |
| What it does not fix | Nothing structural. Bodywork first. | Nothing structural. Rust, dents and prior bad repairs must be corrected before any color goes on. |
If only one panel is damaged and the rest of your paint is sound, a panel refinish is the better and cheaper repair. We will tell you that at the estimate rather than sell you a respray you do not need.
What a Complete Respray Includes
A respray is defined by how far into the car the paint goes. Ours covers:
- Every exterior panel: hood, roof, fenders, doors, quarter panels, trunk or tailgate, and both bumper covers.
- Door jambs and shuts on a color change, so the original color does not appear when a door opens.
- The trunk channel, fuel filler door and the painted surfaces under the hood lip on a color change.
- Mirror caps, spoilers and painted trim where they are body-colored from the factory.
- Rocker panels and lower valances, which take the worst of the road salt on New Jersey winters.
Glass, lamps, badges, handles and moldings come off rather than getting masked wherever practical. It is the slower route and it is the reason the finished edges look factory instead of showing a tape line.
Disassembly Versus Masking
Any shop can mask a car. Masking means taping over the parts that should not be painted and spraying around them, which leaves paint that stops at a tape edge instead of wrapping around the panel the way factory paint does. It is faster, and it is why some resprays start lifting at the edges within a couple of years.
We remove what can be removed: handles, lamps, badges, mirrors, moldings and, on a color change, the door seals. The paint then goes on and around the panel edge. Reassembly takes time and that time shows up on the estimate, but the finish behaves like the original because it is built the same way.
Changing Your Car’s Color
A color change is a bigger job than a same-color respray, and the difference is everything you see when a door, hood or trunk is open. To do it properly the jambs, shuts, trunk channel and fuel door all have to be refinished in the new color. Skipping that is what makes a color change obvious the first time someone opens the passenger door. For specialty finishes such as pearl, candy, matte, or non-factory colors, see our custom car painting service.
Two practical points before you commit. First, the vehicle color recorded on your New Jersey title and registration will no longer match the car, so you should update it with the NJ MVC and tell your insurer. Second, if the car is later damaged, the repair is matched to the new color, which means keeping your paperwork and the formula we hold on file for you.
What a Respray Cannot Fix on Its Own
Paint is a finish, not a repair. Spraying over a problem hides it for a season and then telegraphs straight back through the new clearcoat. Anything below needs correcting before the car goes in the booth:
- Rust. Surface corrosion has to be cut back to sound metal and treated. More extensive corrosion or damaged body panels may require rust and dent repair before refinishing.
- Dents and creases. Every low spot reads twice as clearly under fresh gloss.
- Hail damage. Dozens of shallow dents will remain visible through a new finish, so hail damage repair should be completed before the vehicle is painted.
- Previous poor repairs. Old filler, sanding marks and lifting clearcoat all have to come out first.
- Cracked or split bumper covers need bumper repair or replacement before refinishing.
We assess all of this at the estimate and quote the bodywork separately, so you can see what is preparation and what is paint.
Our Full Car Painting Process, Stage by Stage
- Estimate and inspection. We walk the car with you, note every area of failed paint, rust or damage, and agree the scope and the color.
- Disassembly. Lamps, badges, handles, mirrors, moldings and trim come off. Glass is removed or masked depending on the vehicle.
- Bodywork. Dents are corrected, rust is cut out and treated, and panels are made straight before anything is sprayed.
- Stripping and sanding. Failed clearcoat and loose paint are removed, and the whole shell is sanded to a uniform key.
- Primer and sealer. The car is primed, block sanded and sealed so the color sits on one consistent base.
- Color. Basecoat is sprayed in controlled coats in the downdraft booth, including jambs and shuts on a color change.
- Clearcoat and bake. Clear is applied and cured under controlled temperature and airflow.
- Cut, buff and reassembly. The cured finish is wet sanded and machine polished to remove texture, then everything that came off goes back on.
- Final inspection. We check the car under color-corrected lighting, panel by panel, before it goes back to you.
Looking After a Freshly Resprayed Car
New paint may feel hard to the touch long before it is fully cured, so the first three months are important. For the first two weeks, hand wash the vehicle using plain water and a soft mitt only, and avoid automatic car washes or pressure washing. During the first 90 days, do not apply wax, sealant, or machine polish because the clearcoat is still off-gassing and sealing it too early can trap solvents in the finish. Avoid parking under trees whenever possible, as bird droppings and tree sap can damage fresh clearcoat more quickly than fully cured paint, and rinse off any contamination immediately. During the first winter, try to keep the vehicle away from road salt and rinse the underside and rocker panels after driving on salted roads. Do not apply paint protection film until we confirm that the finish has fully cured.

Is it worth repainting an older car?
It depends on what is under the paint. If the body is straight and rust-free and the car is one you intend to keep, a respray transforms it and is usually the cheapest way to make an older vehicle look cared for. If there is significant rust or structural corrosion, the preparation cost can exceed what the car is worth. We will give you that assessment honestly at the estimate.
Do you paint the door jambs and engine bay?
On a color change, yes. Jambs, door shuts, the trunk channel and the fuel filler door are all refinished, because those are exactly the places a half-done color change gives itself away. On a same-color respray the jambs already match, so we leave them alone unless they are damaged.
Can you paint my car a completely different color?
Yes. Be aware it takes longer and costs more than a same-color respray because of the jamb and shut work, and that you should update the color recorded with the NJ MVC and notify your insurer afterwards. If you want a finish that is not a standard factory color, such as a pearl, candy or matte, that is handled as custom car painting instead.
How long will my car be in the shop?
A full respray is measured in weeks, not days. Disassembly, bodywork, priming, spraying, curing and reassembly each take real time, and rushing any of them is what produces a finish that fails early. We give you a firm timeline once we have inspected the car and agreed the scope.
Do I need bodywork done before a full respray?
If there are dents, creases, hail damage or rust, yes. Fresh gloss makes every imperfection underneath more visible, not less, and paint applied over rust will not stop it spreading. We quote bodywork separately from refinishing so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

I would highly recommend using Northeast Collision as I did for my car. From the management ( Andrew Lallos) to the auto repair men all were highly professional and competent. Andrew Lallos walked me through step by step in what the process would be, dealt with my insurance directly and kept me abreast of all communications. My car was severely damaged but it looks brand new today. Though I hope not to have to use a body shop again, it would only be North East Collision if I had to. Again this experience was painless and professional with a great outcome. Thank You Eileen O’BrienPosted on Google![]()
